Mitsubishi Electric has extended the e-Series Modular Chiller Range to now include M1500-1800 models that utilise R32 as a low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerant. Comprised of cooling only and heat pump models, the Mitsubishi Electric R32 range of e-Series Modular Chillers allow up to six individual units to be connected together to provide system capacities up to 1,080kW.
A modern update on traditional systems, the R32 e-Series Chiller is Mitsubishi Electric’s most efficient chiller system yet.

Available as a cooling only or heat pump version, the e-Series is suitable for both comfort and process cooling applications. The modular design is great for new or replacement projects and ideal for projects with future expansion plans – allowing for a reduced initial capital cost.
Mitsubishi Electric e-Series Modular Chillers are currently operating in New Zealand hotels and commercial buildings, as well as experiencing growth in industries such as horticulture, dairy and industrial processing plants due to its superior efficiency and versatility.

With the New Zealand Government’s ratification of the International Kigali Amendment in 2020 sparking a steep phasedown of HFCs, building owners, facility managers and the construction industry have been looking for HVAC systems that deliver high operational efficiency whilst minimising the GWP of the refrigerants used within these systems.
The new R32 e-Series Modular Chillers offer significant environmental benefits over conventional R410A chillers. The use of R32 compatible compressors and flat tube heat exchangers allows for approximately 68% reduction in refrigeration volume and approximately 89% reduction in CO2 equivalent in the EACV-M1500YC(-N)(-BS).
A new compressor with a suction chamber injection mechanism and an inverter control system that automatically controls the operating frequency realise the use of R32 refrigerant and a wide water operating range.
e-Series Modular Chillers offer significantly improved seasonal efficiency when compared to R410A e-Series machines, which means that they cost less to operate over their lifetime.

The use of high performance heat exchangers allows for a greater surface area whilst also keeping the units much narrower than conventional chillers. The inclusion of fins inside the flat tube heat exchanger divides the flow path of refrigerant and improves heat exchange effectiveness. This contributes to greater energy efficiency, reduction in refrigerant volume and a wider operating range.
Water Side Pressure Drop is reduced due to the new heat exchanger design. The heat exchanger assembly is complete with drain valve and air vents. These allow for easy air bleeding and draining of the heat exchanger.
Up to six individual units can be connected together to provide a system capacity from 150-900kW for the M1500 model or 180-1080kW for the M1800 model. Using this modular approach reduces plant space requirements as well as simplifying logistics and installation.
A modular approach also lends itself to a staged installation for future HVAC demands, as modular chillers can be scaled accordingly and are easily replaced.
When installed using the inbuilt headers, individual modules can be isolated from the water circuit thanks to the inbuilt isolation valves. This allows for maintenance to be carried out while the other modules remain in operation.
Typical chiller control systems allow units to run at a maximum capacity while other units are in standby during part load. The Mitsubishi Electric e-Series Chiller Range is designed to optimise chiller compressor frequency based on the number of connected units, maintaining the highest part load efficiency possible.

With up to six units operating in one bank, this function improves system efficiency when operating at low to medium loads. Furthermore the run time of each unit is equalised by the control system, this prevents uneven wear on the units and extends the lifespan of the system.
The e-Series Modular Chillers are by their nature much quieter than conventional chillers. By utilising highly efficient fan and compressor technologies within a uniquely shaped chassis, the e-Series Modular Chiller range offers low noise levels that are ideal for high density areas such as city centres where commercial and residential buildings mix.
While the standard e-Series models come with excellent corrosion resistance, the Coastal Protection e-Series models (-BS) go a step further by treating external panels and other key elements to a higher paint specification, providing further protection from aggressive salt environments often needed in New Zealand.
The water temperature in each module can be controlled using local remote controller PAR-W31MAA or by using centralised controller AE-200E. The AE-200E controller can centrally control up to 24 units or 24 systems connected via M-Net. The maximum number of connectable units can be further increased using EW-50E or AE-50E Expansion Controllers.

The NZS5149 standard that deals with refrigerant concentration in confined spaces has been around since 2016. It’s important as it affects every new or altered DX system installed in NZ – but it is largely overlooked.
If you are designing or installing DX HVAC systems you need to know about NZS5149, as by not meeting the standard the consequence could be maximum penalties of $500,000 or up to 2 years’ imprisonment.
NZS5149 is a safety and environmental standard that primarily deals with refrigerant leakage and more precisely the risk of asphyxiation or fire that can result from any leak. The standard itself is around 200 pages long set out in four sections covering:
NZS5149 definitely is a tricky standard, but anyone working with a DX air con or DX industrial plant should be using it regularly.
Many of the old school refrigerants we have been using (like R410A) are class A1 refrigerants. These are non-flammable but somewhat toxic, so under NZS5149 they only have a toxicity limit. However many of the newer refrigerants (think R32, R1234ze, etc.) are A2 class, which means they are both mildly toxic and mildly flammable. These have the double whammy of both a toxicity and a flammability limit - with the stricter of the two being your overall limit. So any flammable refrigerant will likely be harder to make comply with the standard.
However as we're all aware many "old" gasses like R410A have high Global Warming Potential, so are in a heavy phase out period. Going forward you are more likely to have to deal with a "new" gas that has more stringent requirements.
Annexes B1, B2 and B3 in section one of NZS5149 will tell you all the details for the gas you have. These can be applied in to tables A1 and A2 in the same section - which is where you start to see what you are up for and how big the mountain is that you have to climb.
From a comfort cooling perspective hydronic systems generally have the chiller sited outside in the open air - so even though the volume of refrigerant in them could be large, 99% of the time they won't be a problem for safety under NZS5149.
Most 1:1 split systems usually won't be too much of an issue either, as often the refrigerant charge volumes they have are pretty small. So unless you have a high capacity split serving a small volume space these are unlikely to cause you any issues under NZS5149. The exception is floor console splits as these are mounted close to the ground which causes issues with the flammability calculation. Take care with these.
The real problem child is VRV / VRF systems as these often have a large gas charge with the refrigerant going right into occupied spaces - which can be small. Combine this with the heavy phase down of R410A gas that all large VRV / VRF systems use, and you can see why designers are moving away from these types of systems.
NZS5149 is also why you won't find any large VRV / VRF DX systems being offered in R32. There is simply no way they could comply with the more stringent flammability requirements of R32 - they have enough trouble complying with the lesser toxicity levels of R410A.
Now looking at applications, the standard sets out a sliding scale for requirements based on room occupancy. As you go up the scale the requirements to comply become more and more onerous.
In comfort cooling the potentially problematic DX systems are currently all either R410A or R32. So for a standard room the rough maximum concentration levels are:
R410A = approx. 1kg per 1m2 of any room served*
R32 = approx. 1kg per 6m2 of any room served*
*note assumes 2.4m floor to ceiling height. Ceiling void cannot be included in room volume.
In my experience mitigation for excessive refrigerant concentration will be expensive, difficult or both. So the first approach you should look at is changing the design to avoid exceeding the maximum concentration levels by:
If you can't do any of the above then you are up for mitigation, this can be found in section 3 of NZS5149. Some of the possible methods are:
A floor in a commercial building that has been separated in to 40x small offices with a VRV system proposed to condition them. Clearly an office is a class B application, so there is no limit on the system charge and no problem right? No, wrong!
In class B, any space that exceeds the maximum concentration limit still needs to have sensors and an alarm system. So if all 40 offices exceed the maximum limit we are up for approximate costs as follows:

As you can see the hidden cost can often be a lot more than changing to a different system type or another design related change.

Selecting refrigerant driven HVAC plants based simply on capital cost, is easy. But have you ever considered the potential service delivery risks, or the financial and environmental repercussions of these decisions on the future?
It’s time to move away from our reliance on the “safe” relatively benign HFC refrigerants we have all become used to.
The New Zealand Government ratified the International Kigali Amendment in 2020, affecting all HFC’s and blends which of course are the work horse of the HVAC and commercial refrigeration industry.
The Kigali Amendment requires Montreal Protocol Parties to gradually phase down HFC production and use. In New Zealand a phasedown to 15% of an agreed base level will happen incrementally until the target is reached in 2036-2037. The refrigerant import volumes are capped based on CO2e (equivalent tonnes) and not on any one particular refrigerant.
This single piece of international legislation will be the main driver for refrigerant change.
Moving to HFO pure and compound blends appears to be the way the industry is going. HFO or Hydro Fluoro Olefins are fourth generation halogenated compounds that contain hydrogen fluorine and a double carbon bond.
They are typically low Global Warming Potential (GWP) and zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP). Most are A2L class and many are used in blends like R513A along with HFC’s and some naturals.
HFO’s when released into the upper atmosphere break down in days rather than thousands of years but there are potential issues around production of TFA (Triflouroacetic Acid) or more commonly known as acid rain. The long term environmental effects are not yet known, just like HFC’s when they were introduced.
R290 is of course highly refined propane and is already used in India, China and very soon the EU. With zero ODP, virtually zero GWP, and very low charge volume per kW, this will drive R290 as the solution for this massive market segment.
R290 is relatively cheap to produce, highly efficient and environmentally acceptable however the only fish hook is the risk mitigation around its A3 flammability. Our industry must find a way to deal with the safety issues of R290 sooner rather than later.
Changing from the staple “safe” A1 HFC’s to A2, A2L and even A3 solutions will create issues around safety risk mitigation.
AS/NZS 5149 requires safety systems that must be factored into ongoing cost projections, such as:
The first of many by Mitsubishi Electric is the development of the R32 hybrid secondary refrigerant VRF technology.
Back in 2014 when this technology was introduced the industry was very sceptical of the change but through persistence and brave engineering project decisions, Hybrid VRF is now 35% of our VRF projects and rising. There is over 11 megawatts of installed equipment in New Zealand, demonstrating this technology as a clear winner.
By using water as the heat transfer vehicle for the majority of the air conditioning system, Hybrid VRF reduces the overall amount of refrigerant in the system. Furthermore, with only water connecting the branch box to the indoor units, Hybrid VRF minimises the need for expensive leak detection leading to significant reductions in on-going maintenance costs in the controlled space that would be needed to comply with AS/NZS 5149 (1-4) 2016. Gains in sensible heat load capacities, higher air flows and more comfortable air off coil conditions have also been desirable off shoots of this technology.
AS/NZS 5149 is well overdue for review however there are no current plans to do so.
Government has indicated that refrigerant will be declared a registered product under the Waste Minimisation Act 2008. This will mean a mandated product stewardship scheme will be introduced encompassing a cradle to grave program, in the same way car tyres are handled - likely to drive mandatory refrigerant handling qualifications that don’t presently exist in New Zealand.
This will require registration and training for about, 7000 technicians over the next 3-4 years. Our system struggles to train 200 apprentices currently.
With higher risk refrigerants, fines for refrigerant accidental release and a shortage of trained technicians, ethical suppliers like BDT are going to have to step up to deliver a high level of technical service, field support and training to ensure security of supply.
Plant design and selection decisions need to be based on sustainable, efficient through life choices not “the cheapest current capital cost”, as those times are over.
The practical reality is that many current HVAC plants will have to be replaced before the end of its optimal life due to the unavailability and/or the cost of the refrigerant charge in the case of a catastrophic leak event.
The pending global warming catastrophe is driving this phasedown of the refrigerants we have used for the last 40 years.
We are a small country in the world scheme of things but with brave engineering decisions, we can future proof our country’s industries, our economy and our building stock to ensure we are leaders not followers in refrigerant roulette that will be the next 10 to 15 years and beyond.

An R32 Hybrid VRF System can require up to 52% less refrigerant for the same capacity when compared to an equivalent R410A traditional VRF system. R32 Hybrid VRF utilises a single composition refrigerant which has a GWP of only 675 and as a total system it can have an 84% reduction in the carbon dioxide equivalent.

When selecting hot water systems for commercial and industrial applications, having a reliable system that will meet today’s needs now and those of the future is important. Mitsubishi Electric have developed QAHV; the latest innovation in a comprehensive line-up of Hot Water Heat Pump products. Specifically designed to produce high temperature potable hot water up to 90°C, the QAHV is suitable for commercial and industrial projects.
Using natural CO2 as the refrigerant, the QAHV provides one of the lowest environmental impacts when generating potable hot water. It is engineered to perform well in harsh conditions and climates, and of course being an inverter heat pump it does so extremely efficiently. By adopting Mitsubishi Electric's unique technology, the QAHV ensures highly reliable performance as well as high heating capacity even at low outdoor temperatures.
The industry is shifting. The Government has banned new coal boilers from the end of 2021 and businesses will need to phase out existing ones by 2037. Simultaneously the Government is providing $70M to support and incentivise businesses to switch away from boilers to cleaner, greener options for hot water production. While many may turn to natural gas, the Climate Change Commission is proposing no new gas connections to buildings from 2025 and a steep phase out of existing gas boilers from 2035 onwards.
Currently gas is used to produce hot water in the majority of commercial buildings in New Zealand, and while gas is an attractive option due to its compact footprint, it is a very high carbon emitter and isn’t particularly efficient, even if the building is using a modern condenser boiler – not to mention the potential risk to occupants if a leak occurs.
With the future of traditional forms of hot water heating uncertain, it is clear that those within the industry, engineers, designers, installers or owners, must move to new solutions for water heating in commercial buildings – and the move needs to start now.
The growing emphasis on global warming mitigation has stimulated interest in a new generation of low-GWP refrigerants, many of the new refrigerants being created feature GWP’s around 500 to 600 or even less. But nothing can compete with CO2 and its GWP of 1 – it provides the reference point for environmental impact that all other refrigerants are measured against.
The QAHV series utilises CO2 as it is an environmentally-friendly, safe and natural refrigerant with zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 1.
There is no greener alternative currently available in New Zealand.
The Mitsubishi Electric QAHV System utilises a twisted and spiral gas cooler. This patented technology enhances energy efficiency while delivering high temperature hot water.
Using twisted pipes as water pipes and running the refrigerant pipes along their grooves helps to increase the heat-conductive area. The continuous spiral groove design accelerates the turbulence effect of water and helps to reduce pressure loss within the heat exchanger, enhancing efficiency.
Equipped with the latest inverter scroll compressor, QAHV offers unparalleled efficiency when compared to fixed speed systems - boasting an impressive COP of 3.88*.

As ambient temperatures drop, so too does the capacity of heat pumps. However, the QAHV is able to provide its full heating capacity of 40kW even at ambient temperatures as low as -3°C. Furthermore, the unit operates to supply 90°C hot water in ambient temperatures as low as -25°C. This superior level of performance is achieved using Mitsubishi Electric’s industry-first Flash Injection Circuit which provides the optimum amount of refrigerant to the system via a compressor through a specially designed injection port. This ensures a highly stable operation that at the same time, meets the guidelines for Legionella.
As a single pass high temperature lift machine, QAHV works best with a high water temperature difference and delivers 10l/min or more of full temperature usable hot water in real time. This directly reduces the amount of storage required to meet the peak demands, and gives quicker recovery. Ideal for commercial uses where hot water demand is high, such as gyms, hotels, motels, aged care facilities and hospitals.
To help extend the life of the QAHV outdoor unit when located within highly corrosive environments, the optional Mitsubishi Electric “BS” Salt Corrosion Protection System can be applied during the outdoor units manufacturing process to ensure all components are 100% protected before the outdoor unit is assembled.

Mitsubishi Electric has extended the Lossnay LGH Energy Recovery Ventilation Range to now include Sensible Heat Recovery Only models. The new range features a new non-permeable Lossnay Core that is specifically designed to recover sensible heat and remove moisture at the same time.
The newest addition to the Lossnay Range introduces fresh filtered air and thanks to the new core can now draw stale air out from areas with high humidity such as bathrooms, kitchens and laundries as well as commercial applications such as gyms, healthcare centres, schools and offices.
Furthermore, the range features easier installation, quiet operation, high energy efficiency and optimised control.
This system is designed to transfer sensible heat only (the heat you can feel as temperature changes) and maximises heat recovery from the stale outgoing air. In addition, due to the non-permeable core it also removes moisture in high humidity areas at the same time.
The available energy is transferred and re-used to pre-warm or pre-cool the incoming fresh air, maximising energy efficiencies. In doing so, moisture build-up is minimised while healthy humidity levels are maintained and managed for occupants throughout the entire building.
It is important to note that it does not recover latent heat, which is the additional heat contained in the airborne moisture in the air. The Sensible Lossnay System uses a non-permeable core so moisture cannot be absorbed by the core. For this reason, the system has a drain connection that is piped to waste.
Now you can bring fresh filtered air in and draw stale air out, even from high moisture areas - with the added benefit of Sensible Heat Recovery maximising energy efficiencies. The non-permeable Lossnay Core enables the system to ventilate all areas, including those with high humidity such as bathrooms, kitchens, gyms and health care centres.
Maintenance is made easier with the fully removable and washable core. The Sensible Lossnay design also includes a full drain pan which avoids mould and odour inside the unit by ensuring moisture is drained throughout all seasons.
The unit features one drain pipe terminal allowing for quicker and lower cost installation. Trap piping is not required as the new Sensible Lossnay unit features backflow prevention and an internal inclined drain pan, which not only helps with installation, but also reduces the risk of mould and odour.
Flexible ductwork and a swivel drain pipe mean installation can be incorporated into building designs with the ability to avoid obstructions and be set out of the way against walls.
Furthermore, the chassis of the Sensible Lossnay Range is lightweight, making installation easy and safe.
With models starting from 18dBA*, the Sensible Lossnay System includes a unique, specifically designed fan that optimises the balance between airflow and static pressure to minimise noise levels.
The new range also has an optional Silencer Duct that can reduce noise further when a quiet solution is paramount.

Mitsubishi Electric has launched its latest addition to the already market-leading Ecodan Hot Water Heat Pump Range.
The ultra-quiet Ecodan Monobloc Outdoor Series has been expanded to include models that now utilise R32 refrigerant. As a more environmentally-friendly product with high operational efficiency, R32 has a low global warming potential (GWP) of 675 – less than one-third of the traditional R410A refrigerant.
Going forward, it will play a huge role in helping to reduce the environmental impact of compressor-driven appliances. What’s more, it’s also easier to reuse and recycle as it’s a single component refrigerant.
As a result, we’ll likely see R32 refrigerant swiftly become the standard for hot water heat pump systems going forward.
The monobloc range will be available from July 2021.
R32 model and capacity lineup

In addition to a 200L capacity, a smaller 170L*3 and a larger 300L packaged cylinder have been added as part of the D-Generation lineup.
The cylinders are completely pre-plumbed and wired for ease of installation.

Boasting a capacity of 9.0kW in cooling (10.3kW in heating), this model features next-generation R32 high-efficiency compressor technology developed and engineered to use less power than ever before. Heat pumps are adopting a new energy rating scale and label, based on the international Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) methodology which identifies how air conditioners perform in different climate zones. The new rating scale will assess winter heating performance more accurately for New Zealand consumers.
Air conditioners and heat pumps sold in New Zealand must, by law, comply with Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and Mandatory Energy Performance Labelling (MEPL)/Energy Rating Label (ERL) requirements.
As such, new air conditioner regulations will be reflected in a new label called the Zone Energy Rating Label (ZERL). These regulations have already been adopted in Australia and are expected to become mandatory in May 2021 for New Zealand, dependant on Cabinet sign-off.
Six months’ notice will be provided via the official Government newspaper and authoritative journal of constitutional record ‘The Gazette’ before the new regulations come into force in New Zealand.
Mitsubishi Electric is in a period of transition where you will start seeing new products or revisions registered under the new SEER regulations and displaying the new ZERL. This gives consumers and installers more information about which air conditioner will perform best in their climate zone.
Our Black Diamond Series High Walls, the new EcoCore Designer Series High Walls and RapidHeat Floor Consoles with R32 refrigerant are the first products to adopt these new standards.

The Black Diamond Technologies (BDT) Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Tony Hamilton to the position of General Manager - Mitsubishi Electric, commencing employment from 1st February 2021.
Tony comes to BDT with a wealth of experience and has worked abroad for the last 5 years in Africa and Europe. His roles included Managing Director of Aggreko for Sub-Sahara Africa, managing a business with sales revenue of USD47m. Tony's last position was Chief Operating Officer for Zola Electric in Europe, a company focussed on bringing sustainable on and off-grid energy solutions including micro-inverter, PV and storage battery systems to developing countries.
With this plethora of experience, Darryl Rochester, Managing Director of BDT, expressed that Tony Hamilton will be invaluable in driving BDT to continue cementing Mitsubishi Electric as the market-leaders of the New Zealand HVAC industry. Furthermore, with BDT's commitment and vision of creating New Zealand's sustainable future, Tony will be integral in driving this strategic direction going forward.

Right in time for another hot and humid summer, we are excited to announce the arrival of New Zealand’s most compact high wall indoor unit, the EcoCore AP Mini.
At only 250mm high, 760mm wide and just 178mm deep, the EcoCore AP Mini is specifically designed for areas where space is at a premium, due to a lack of available wall area.
The new AP Mini Series indoor units have a significant 16.4% size reduction in height and a 5% reduction in width when compared to the bigger EcoCore AP Series models.
They provide a real solution for installation above doorways in bedrooms as well as in home offices – where a heat pump previously would not have been able to fit.
The AP Mini Range features two models in the line-up to efficiently heat and cool smaller living areas. They replace the AP22 indoor unit.

The PAR-CT01MAA Controller is compatible with Mitsubishi Electric VRF, Hybrid VRF and P-Series Split Systems.
The large 3.5 inch / HVGA full colour backlit display can be adapted with up to 180 colours to choose from. Both the control parameters shown as well as the background colours can be modified.
The slimline controller is available in either a Standard White or striking Premium Black case colour option, allowing it to be seamlessly matched to any contemporary interior.
You can also select which control icons are actually displayed. This means you can choose to only show the control features you want occupants to have access to in each room. This makes the icon-based graphic interface intuitive and easy to use.
In addition, the ability to upload a brand logo or an image enables further personalisation.
Maintenance and commissioning is straight forward. Wireless programming is done once on a smartphone and enables the same configuration to be loaded into multiple controllers over Bluetooth, saving on overall setup time.
Furthermore, Bluetooth connectivity is also available for end-user wireless control via a smartphone within 10 metres of the controller.
When room occupants download the app, they are able to connect to the remote control via their smartphone or tablet.

The Mitsubishi Electric Climaveneta INTEGRA Range has been extended with the addition of the new i-FX-Q2-G05 multipurpose outdoor unit.
Utilising the more environmentally-friendly R513A refrigerant, the system simultaneously produces heating and chilled water using two completely independent hydronic circuits.
These heat pump chillers now exceed the minimum seasonal efficiency tier imposed by the ErP (Energy-related Products) Directive 2009/125/EC, effective in Europe from January 1st 2021.
The range offers high annual efficiencies achieved through inverter technology and uses low GWP R513A refrigerant.
With a GWP of only 631, R513A refrigerant has a significantly smaller carbon footprint compared to traditional systems utilising R134A.
Furthermore, the refrigerant is also non-toxic and non-flammable (Class A1 according to ISO 817).
This makes it the best choice for projects that require an eco-sustainable energy efficient solution.
The move to R513A is in line with a worldwide phasedown of the production and consumption of hydrofluorocarbons (HFC), moving away from traditional HFC refrigerants such as R134A to more environmentally-friendly, energy efficient blended refrigerants.
Thanks to the use of full inverter screw compressor and EC fans, the unit guarantees optimal energy efficiency for the system.
This high efficiency translates into reduced energy consumption throughout the year for any mode of operation, no matter what the outdoor conditions are.
In a traditional comfort application, an HVAC plant works at maximum power only for a limited number of hours per year. Therefore, it operates at part load conditions most of the time.
The new i-FX-Q2-G05 multipurpose units use the latest variable-speed technology in all the main components. With their accurate design, these models achieve greater efficiencies compared to similar fixed-speed units, with any combination of heating/cooling load in any season.
As these models incorporate variable-speed screw compressors, the system is able to effectively achieve any combination of load required by the HVAC plant.
Furthermore, it features superior Total Efficiency Ratio (TER) efficiencies of up to 19% higher when compared to units with fixed-speed compressors.
These higher efficiencies have been obtained by calculating both SCOP and SEER efficiency parameters with the variable water flow calculation method. As such, this takes full advantage of the variable speed technology of the i-FX-Q2-G05.
To allow the unit to manage the variable water flow, the standard configuration of the hydronic modules and flow controls has slightly changed. Now, the unit is able to control the activation and the speed (via a 0-10V signal) of an external variable speed pump both on the evaporator and on the condenser side.
The inverter's ability to continuously change the compressor speed provides reduced sound emissions, especially at part load to maximise acoustic comfort.
The i-FX-Q2-G05 Range is available in three noise options:
Inverter technology provides the added advantage of no in-rush current.
Sudden power surges and variations in the starting torque are minimised. Additionally, possible disturbances to the power grid are eliminated. As a result, lowering stress on electrical components and improving the reliability of the system.
The frequency converters selected are characterised by a Displacement Power Factor between 0.97 and 0.99. As a result, the Unit Power Factor under nominal operating conditions is always higher than that of a similar unit without inverter technology.
The i-FX-Q2-G05 utilises W3000TE Software, which is characterised by advanced functions and algorithms for optimum control. As such, it ensures a rapid adaptive response to the different dynamics of the plant, in all operating conditions.
Access to the controller is through the innovative KIPlink Interface. With more versatility than the traditional keyboard concept, users can operate the unit directly from their smartphone, tablet, or laptop.

Mitsubishi Electric Lossnay Single Room Ventilation is designed to provide cost-effective energy recovery ventilation to one specific area in the home. In addition to the wall-mounteed VL100 Single Room Ventilation System, we have extended the range to now also include a ducted model that is the perfect unobtrusive in-ceiling solution.
Stale air with higher levels of CO2 is a common problem not only in schools and offices but also in homes where structures are becoming more and more airtight due to more stringent building regulations.
High levels of CO2 can affect concentration and learning as well as overall wellbeing and productivity. Furthermore, the lack of natural ventilation in airtight spaces can lead to the build-up of moisture-laden stale air. This is the perfect breeding ground for mould that can trigger allergy or respiratory problems.

In the hot water heat pump market we focus a lot on efficiency and payback period. This is certainly important but what else makes these solutions practical and beneficial to the installer and the homeowner?
To aid the modern applications of buildings and environmental impact, Ecodan Hot Water Heat Pumps have many features that add a high amount of functionality and assistance to the installer and end-user.
Many underfloor heating (UFH) installations involve wet cement poured over the UFH pipework and then has to set. The tricky part is the dry time where it’s pivotal to prevent any cracking or unwanted movement, especially when another floor layer is added on top of the dried concrete.
Ecodan solves this by using Floor Dry Up Mode which lets you set step increment by as little as 1°C for 1 to 7 days to reach the desired UFH temperature. This method can be used to dry the concrete out and remain at target temperature whilst new flooring is added.
The Dry Up Mode can be programmed to suit the concrete type and installer preference for the build, making this one of the most practical features for UFH applications on the market.

As BDT and Mitsubishi Electric grow into the new era of sustainability and environmental awareness, one thing has become very clear; systems comprising of water will play a large part in the transference of heat in the commercial HVAC market globally in the coming years.
Hybrid VRF (HVRF) bridges the gap between VRF / VRV solutions and heat recovery chiller plant, offering an alternative to common hydronic systems while still retaining the inherent benefits associated to the water-based options.
The HVAC market has been using water as a refrigeration and heating medium for many years, with chilled water being a safe, reliable refrigerant with a number of beneficial characteristics. Chillers, hot water heat pumps and 4 or even 6 pipe hydronic solutions have been utilised in large commercial buildings for many decades.
Heat recovery chiller systems are considered the crème-de-la-crème of HVAC solutions, incorporating the inherent efficiencies only possible through heat recovery with the comfort and security of water as the medium being circulated into occupied spaces. However, these have been a largely uneconomical option for small to medium scale applications.
The Hybrid VRF (HVRF) product category bridges the gap between VRF / VRV solutions and heat recovery chiller plant, offering an alternative to common hydronic systems while still retaining the inherent benefits associated to the water-based options.
Hybrid VRF places itself in the market as an economic hydronic heat recovery solution which can be applied from high-end residential homes and the small commercial market right through to a large scale modular solution.
With the adoption of global initiatives to reduce greenhouse gases and local legislative requirements with regards to occupant safety, HVRF provides design engineers and mechanical contractors the mitigation of risk associated with circulating refrigerants into occupied spaces. Furthermore it also reduces the potential global warming impact the larger refrigerant volume imparts; offering a saving on associated costs.
In the New Zealand market alone, BDT have seen a huge uptake of Hybrid VRF in the market. With over 5MW of heating capacity ordered to date across 42 projects Hybrid VRF applications are growing.
The largest Hybrid VRF project in the New Zealand market currently in construction incorporates 512kW cooling and 575kW of heating across 11 HVRF systems and is due for completion in FY21. This scale of project is a prime example of situations where a hydronic solution could have been applied however the HVRF alterative offered ease of construction, cost savings, modularity and redundancy reduction in the case of a mechanical failure.
Of course on the other hand, smaller systems can offer the benefits of hydronic architecture to projects that may be of a scale in which it is not economic to outlay the capital cost associated to a 4 pipe solution.
One such case is PGG Wrightsons Seeds wherein the developer Ngai Tahu was seeking to design a water-based system for their new building in Lincoln. The prerequisite was for a hydronic, water-based design for occupant comfort and safety reasons. In this instance, Hybrid VRF was the nominated solution to meet the hydronic requirements while offering the installation advantages of a modular VRF system.
In commercial buildings, additional leak detection systems specific to air conditioning are often installed to safeguard occupants due to increasing safety regulations. This affects hotels in particular, where air conditioners are installed in the room space and occupant safety is critical.
A leak detection system is designed to trigger an alarm if refrigerant was to leak into the room space and initiate an evacuation of the area to try and prevent harm to the occupants. These systems can be expensive and add to the cost of design, build and maintenance.
The small footprint and modular design means building owners can now take advantage of a manageable phased installation.
GWP is a measure of the global warming potential as compared to CO2 which has a unitary GWP of 1. R32 refrigerant is zero ozone depleting (ODP)and has a GWP 66% less than R410A. For example R410A will hold 2,088 times more heat when released in the upper atmosphere than the equivalent amount of CO2 would.
R32 refrigerant is being adopted by Mitsubishi Electric as an important step in the process towards the ultimate goal of a zero ODP, zero GWP, efficient, safe, and non-toxic refrigerant.

The i-BX Hydronic Air to Water Chiller and Heat Pump Series features superior efficiency, flexible design and advanced control. The range is ideal for residential or small commercial applications.
With capacities from 4.3kW to 35.1kW, the i-BX Air Cooled Chiller comes in cooling-only for commercial applications. Featuring advanced inverter technology, these units achieve an average SEER of 4.53.
The i-BX has a large operating field, with full-load operation guaranteed between -10°C to 45°C outdoor air. Correspondingly the unit can produce chilled water with evaporator outlet temperatures from -8° to 18°C.
The range offers capacities from 4.2kW to 35.1kW. Furthermore, Mitsubishi Electric inverter compressor technology ensures greater energy efficiencies are able to be achieved, resulting in an average SCOP LT35°C of 3.80, SCOP ML55°C of 2.95 and SEER of 4.40.
This system can produce hot water up to 60°C and is ideal for any heating terminal; perfect for residential or small commercial applications.
Both the i-BX and i-BX-N models come in a packaged monobloc, ready-to-install arrangement. All hydraulic components such as the EC pump, expansion tank, safety valve, air bleed valve and flow switch are already included in the unit for simple application in any plant space.
Synonymous with Mitsubishi Electric’s quality and reliability for high performance, the i-BX Range boasts high seasonal efficiency at partial loads thanks to the modulation of the compressor with DC inverter technology. Therefore, the unit provides the exact thermal power in correspondence with the actual needs of the building and reduces energy consumption.
With the benefit of variable fan speeds, energy usage in the system is lowered. The dynamic control of the water supply temperature according to the outdoor air temperature greatly increases the comfort and energy efficiency of the system.
Furthermore, the i-BX Series features condensation control for an extended operating range.
Noise levels are also decreased by modulating the fan speed and frequency of the compressor.
The compressor is also installed on rubber anti-vibration mounts and is soundproofed by special sound-absorbing material.
The EEV enables the refrigerant flow to be optimised, effective temperature control and fast regulation which results in high efficiencies. In addition to this, the wide control capacity allows the compressors to always operate in optimal conditions and expand its operating limits.
Featuring advanced water pump technology with an EC motor, commissioning is simplified and reduced operating costs can be realised.
The i-BX Range uses NadiSystem Controls to effectively monitor the plant components. This advanced system ensures the easy integration between different heating sources based on availability, performance and costs of their use – favouring renewable sources.
The auxiliary sources are used to meet the building’s needs at low outdoor temperatures by integrating the heating capacity of the heat pump.
This system also features special functions for perfect customisation such as the ability to set the water setpoint with fixed or dynamic value with the climatic curve, anti-freeze protection depending of the water temperature and outside air temperature, and weekly programming up to 6 timeslots.
In addition to this, digital input for Night Mode and the remote connectivity to BMS systems via serial card accessories is also enabled.
With the benefit of NadiSystem Cascade Control, up to four units of the same power can be connected in cascade to make up 36.5kW – 146kW capacity where the thermal requirements are high.
The configuration is managed in master / slave mode, with the master unit that takes care of processing the information and transmits it to the slave units.

The new Single Fan PUMY-SP Power Multi Series from Mitsubishi Electric features a more compact outdoor unit, making the range the ideal solution for applications where outdoor space is limited. With the pressure on R410A refrigerant increasing, Mitsubishi Electric’s commitment to reducing the environmental impact of air conditioning has seen the introduction of New Zealand’s first VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) solution that has adopted R32 refrigerant.
Mitsubishi Electric has long been a leader in the world of air conditioning and the world’s first R32 Hybrid VRF Product Range again puts the company at the forefront of the industry.
Hybrid VRF utilises low GWP refrigerant R32, providing a real solution that delivers high operational efficiency whilst minimising the Global Warming Potential of the refrigerants used within these systems.
Having already introduced R32 refrigerant across its residential M-Series and commercial P-Series Split System Ranges, it was only a matter of time that Mitsubishi Electric tackled the VRF / VRV market with a solution that also adopted a low GWP refrigerant like R32.
The Mitsubishi Electric R32 VRF Solution is an evolution of Mitsubishi Electric’s Hybrid VRF System. First introduced in 2014, this unique 2-Pipe Hybrid VRF System combines VRF and chiller technologies using water throughout the majority of the pipework to efficiently transfer simultaneous heating and cooling to different rooms.
By using water as the heat transfer medium for the majority of the air conditioning system, Hybrid VRF reduces the overall amount of refrigerant in the system. In short, the addition of R32 to the Hybrid VRF Range brings all of the benefits of VRF air conditioning in R32 format to deliver a system with a significantly lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) than existing solutions. In fact, the shift from R410A to R32 refrigerant realises a massive 66% reduction in Global Warming Potential.
Over the last 5 years, Hybrid VRF applications have already enjoyed significant growth in New Zealand. These systems have been successfully incorporated in a variety of designs ranging from offices, hotels, retirement villages, education facilities, medical centres and much more.

This unique technology allows for the replacement of old, inefficient R22 systems (which are now phased out) with new, low-GWP R32 heat pump systems without having to replace the existing pipework of the old system but rather, reuse the pipework and wiring to make way for the new R32 system.

When Ruapehu Ski Club was looking to replace hot water facilities in one of their buildings called ‘The Lodge’ on Mount Ruapehu, the club wanted to find a modern, efficient way to provide these important creature comforts for their club members
A major part of RSC’s aim when doing this refurbishment was to reduce the peak load of electricity used during the ski season. They required a hot water heating system that would work in the cold climate and still produce hot water efficiently.
The club building is able to house up to 70 people as well as leisure, cooking, wash facilities and ski workshop facilities.
Five existing hot water cylinders which used direct electric elements providing 900 litres of potable hot water needed to be replaced, alongside the heater in the drying room which consisted of a fan blowing over a 6kW heating element.
The Hot Water Solution
The installation consisted of two 11.2kW Ecodan Hot Water Heat Pump Hydrobox Systems and two 600L Hot Water Storage Cylinders. The outdoor units incorporate the Mitsubishi Electric patented Zubadan Flash Injection Technology which means they are able to maintain their full 11.2kW capacity with 55°C hot water output down to an ambient temperature of -15°C; suitable for the alpine conditions at Mt Ruapehu.
The Ecodan Hydrobox contains hydraulic components, pump, expansion vessel, flow sensor and a refrigerant to water heat exchanger, making it simple to connect just water piping to the cylinders. The two 600L Cylinders contain 40m coils to maximise the heat exchange inside the cylinder. Three temperature sensors are mounted in each cylinder to monitor the tank temperature from top to bottom.
Modulating control valves have been installed to balance the hot water provided by each of the two independent systems, allowing for automatic isolation of each cylinder if temperature cannot be maintained. Electric immersion elements are also installed in the hot water cylinders. These are controlled by the Building Management System to provide additional heating capacity if required during periods of high hot water consumption and to provide legionella prevention at scheduled intervals. The elements also serve as a backup heat source if the Ecodan Systems are shut down for maintenance. The club can reduce peak electricity consumption using the integrated FTC5 Controllers scheduling function so that hot water recovery times are outside of kitchen operating hours.
As the drying room is in continuous use during the ski season, an inverter driven 3.5kW HyperCore High Wall Heat Pump provides ample heat and is also controlled remotely depending on occupancy, further improving efficiency in place of the 6kW fan blown heater.
The BMS Solution
BDT provided a Building Management System to monitor and control the domestic hot water and space heating systems in the lodge. The controls package consisted of a web-enabled Black Diamond Controls Central Controller, BACnet Controller and three MelcoBEMS Mini’s to provide Modbus interfaces to the Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan and HyperCore Systems.
In addition, the site energy consumption is monitored via a newly installed Modbus Energy Meter connected to the main incoming supply. This allows the club to monitor their year-on-year energy savings and real time consumption.
Due to the remote nature of the site, the control system was developed to provide redundancy and automated email paging in the event of faults or persistent low hot water temperature situations.
The BMS provides a web interface which allows specific club member access to remotely monitor and adjust operating parameters such as temperature set point and time schedules, via a secure connection.
This system has seen its first season on the mountain, having successfully delivered hot water to Ruapehu Ski Club and we will continue to monitor the system year on year.

Future Room Temperature Estimation

Using Ecodan, it is possible to control two different flow temperatures, thereby managing two different heating load requirements. The system can adjust and maintain two flow temperatures when different temperatures are required for different rooms; for example, controlling a flow temperature of 45°C for the bedroom radiators and another flow temperature of 35°C for the living room underfloor heating.

The exact origin of using water for heating has some debate, but it dates back to around the 13th century where monks diverted river water and heated it in furnaces to warm their monasteries. With warm buildings in the cold months, the benefits of this ingenuity were obvious and over the years inventors and engineers have gradually found ways to improve on the concept. Following the industrial revolution, Charles Hood wrote the first engineering handbook for hot water heating in 1837, which was published in revised editions for 50 years.
Hydronic heating systems are commonly used throughout Europe and other parts of the world. In fact today, over two thirds of the world use warm water central heating.
So why is water such a good option to use?
If you remember back to school science class, water has a very high “specific heat capacity”. What this means for us is once the water is up to the desired temperature in our heating circuit, the water holds its heat energy well. Therefore it is a good substance to use to distribute heat.

What About Efficiency?
The ideal temperature to run underfloor heating is ideally somewhere between 35°C and 40°C (radiator temperatures vary according to the output capacity of the radiator). This makes using hot water heat pumps ideal for supplying heat to the emitter.
When using gas or oil boilers the temperature of the water coming out of these systems is too hot for underfloor heating. As a result the water needs to be blended down in temperature to mitigate the risk of overheating the house or even damaging the floor. Aside from this, the carbon emissions of these types of heating by comparison to a heat pump is significantly higher. Gas has over 5 times the emissions and oil boilers have over 8 times the emissions of heat pumps.* This is thanks in part to the clean electricity provided to us in New Zealand by the hydroelectric stations and in part to the high efficiency of the Ecodan Air to Water Heat Pumps.

In New Zealand central heating is fast becoming the heating system of choice where whole home comfort is highly desirable. Whether it is underfloor heating, or radiators as used throughout Europe, both are becoming increasingly popular in the domestic market. So, the question must be asked, what is the best way to generate heat? Also, what factors are important to consider when choosing a central heating system for your client?
This is a big subject to cover, and addressing it means that we will have to challenge the way things have always been done by giving detailed attention to areas we often overlook.
These areas include the effects of the day to day weather on a home and if the insulation levels of the home mean that the energy use is higher than necessary.
Among other factors such as location and orientation, good thermal insulation reduces the effect of the surrounding weather on a home. By keeping it cooler in summer and warmer in winter, the need for cooling and heating is reduced.
Current statistics show that the highest consumers of energy in New Zealand homes are hot water (38%) and home heating (36%) which combined account for 74% of your energy use.
Finding the most efficient way to generate your hot water and heating therefore is an important point of consideration.
The Ecodan Range of air to water heat pumps are designed to deliver efficient, renewable heating and hot water for your home. Mitsubishi Electric are once again leading the way with the acclaimed Ecodan Range, bringing intelligent, high quality whole home heating to New Zealand.
Within the industry for air to water heat pumps there is some choice on the market however the performance of the units can vary significantly. A commonly used measure is the Coefficient Of Performance
(COP) which is simply the amount of electrical energy consumed compared to the system heat output. A heat source that is classed as renewable is a product that outputs at least 2.5 times the energy consumed.
For example, a COP of 1 : 2.5. A COP is a specific measure on a given day. So, if the outdoor ambient temperature is 15°C and the heat pump is putting a flow temperature of 35°C, it stands to reason that the COP on that day and time would read very differently to say an ambient temperature of 2°C and a flow temperature of 55°C. In this case the heat pump will need to work harder to pull heat from a colder ambient temperature and maintain a higher output.
What would be more accurate is a measure that rates the system seasonal performance known as Seasonal Coefficient Of Performance (SCOP), where the system is measured against year round outdoor ambient
However, these figures can be hard to find, so how then can you make an educated choice for a system that will meet your client's needs? I would suggest that if manufacturers indicate that their systems are not suitable for colder areas of the country, or if they are reluctant to publish performance at low temperatures, then this is a good indication that their systems perform poorly in colder temperatures.
This means a back up immersion heater will have to be used, compromising system efficiency and therefore increasing environmental impact and run costs.
Simply put – not all heat pumps are the same. In some cases, the performance can be so poor that you would save your client's capital expenditure and run costs if you installed a gas central heating system.
The Mitsubishi Electric Solution

Zubadan's rated heating capacity is maintained even in outdoor temperatures as low as -15°C, with guaranteed heating operation at -25°C outdoor temperature. Furthermore, faster tank heater times are achieved in low ambient temperatures compared to standard models temperature. Zubadan is available on our 8kW – 14kW models only.
State of the art energy monitoring and management of the Ecodan Heat Pump System means families now have the visibility and freedom to efficiently manage their overall household power consumption for heating and hot water. In July, The Auckland Food Show saw thousands ascend to culinary heaven sampling the very best in food, wine and the latest in food preparation technology.
We were there again this year to showcase our sleek Multi Drawer Fridge Range of all shapes and sizes while having a little fun, with buyers simply guessing how many apples were in the Vitalight Humidity Drawer to be in to win a Mitsubishi Electric LX French Door Designer Fridge in either silver or black of their own.

What drew you to our stand at the 2018 Auckland Food Show?
I really liked the Designer Series Fridges on display at the Food Show. Their colours were really different which captured my attention! What colour LX did you choose and why?
We chose the Black LX Fridge because we have always had silver or white fridges in our kitchen. By having a black fridge, it’s something a little different and non-traditional so makes a real statement in our kitchen. What kind of kitchen do you have?
Our kitchen is an open plan style with an island bench. What positive impact has the LX made in making your kitchen the hub of the home for entertaining and family dinners?
Our new fridge has given us plenty more storage especially for fruit and vegetables which is great! What is your favourite feature of the LX so far?
We love that it has a veggie drawer that is separate from the rest of the fridge giving us more room for more fruit and veges. Why is the Vitalight Humidity Drawer your favourite feature?

This year at The Auckland Food Show, visitors experienced delicious treats from around New Zealand, culinary equipment to up their cooking game, and the chance to win a brand new Mitsubishi Electric Designer Series Refrigerator.
To be in to win, visitors guessed how many apples were in the Vitalight Humidity Drawer of the CX370 Designer Series on the Mitsubishi Electric stand.
Out of hundreds of entries, 18 people guessed the correct number of apples (92), and our winner was randomly selected from these correct guesses.
